What that means is that although the chip runs internally at 66 MHz, all the input and output from the rest of the board happens at 33 MHz. It was a bit naughty of Apple to advertise these as 66 MHz machines, and they stopped doing so pretty early in the run from memory.

Subject: 68LC040 at 66 MHz?

Anyway I noticed one of my 580s had a different CPU in it, marked as an
XC68LC040FE33B 66 / 33 MHz. I found this on Google, referring to this CPU:

http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg05876.html

so I know it is just a later version of the same basic CPU. However I
had a thought about the marking that says "66 / 33 MHz" - I assume this
means that the later revision of the chip runs at either of these
speeds. I don't suppose anyone knows if there is a system I can put this
CPU into that will run it at the full 66 MHz?
