Thanks for that.  Just after posting (as usual) I found some
instructions (I am new to openwrt as well as owfs so am thrashing
about in a quagmire still) and did
opkg update
which picked up package info from
http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/10.03.1-rc5/brcm47xx/packages/Packages.gz
which I note is not quite the url you suggested - does that matter?
and then
opkg install owshell owfs
which appears to have installed them ok but have not yet tried it as I
have not got the 1-wire adaptor yet.

I have a DS9097U-009 on order and have fitted the serial ports as
http://www.rwhitby.net/projects/wrt54gs with an additional wire to
take 5V to RTS for the adaptor.

Hopefully I am going down an appropriate path.
