Probably not. You are using a USB adapter, and this example used a serial 
adapter.

The fact that you aren't getting the rest of the devices is interesting, 
however.

Just a thought: Do you by any chance have a spare i386 machine handy? You 
could run the bootable CD on it and test your hardware.
