In this case, it wasn't a read error -- rather trying to apply bus power put the program in an infinite loop.
In general, OWFS is pretty fault-tolerant. Individual reads and writes can fail and just return errors. The adapter can be removed and replaced and the program goes on. I have data collection that goes on for months at a time with no intervention.
