That is a really strange reference design and I hadn't see that one
before, it doesn't make any sense to tie D7 to ground. All of the other
1-Wire designs I have seen are 4 bit, including AAGs and the one in the
data sheet for the DS2408. Since there are only 8 I/O lines and RSTZ on
the DS2408 you can't use an 8 bit interface to the LCD because with the
strobe line and the DATA/CMD line it takes 10 I/O lines for an 8 bit
interface.

The main difference is that our (Hobby Boards) design uses a different
pinout between the DS2408 and the LCD.

There a two published designs.

The Maxim/AAG design is 8 bit.
The Hobby Boards is 4 bit.

The commands are prefixed H and M.

Dear all,

for my project, a Onewire controlled HD44780 display would come in
handy. I
see owfs supports the reference design from

<http://www.maxim-ic.com/appnotes.cfm/appnote_number/3286>

As the D7 line is tied to GND in that schematic, it's not possible to
use all
the characters (and commands) in the 44780's ROM in 8 Bit mode. That
brings
up my question:

Does owfs use the 8 Bit mode of the 44780 in that design, or the 4 Bit
mode?

Kind regards
