Unfortunately, I've had some experience with the HA7NET boxes...

Based on some information that I'd received that indicated that there is
a technical problem with most of the humidity sensors at low humidities,
and the fact that the testing we do is at low humidities, we bought one
HA7NET box and an HMP-2001s sensor.

The first sensor had problems at low humidities too.. so we talked to
the manufacturer about it.. They indicated that they had a previously
undiagnosed problem, and that they would fix it.

They did.. and based on that, we ordered 5 more units/sensors.

After we placed the order, they indicated that they were re-engineering
the sensor.. and that it would be a little while before they would ship.

We were willing to accept the delay, in exchange for the accuracy they
promised.

The specs were: +-.5% RH Linearity, an operating range extending to 100%
RH, humidity stability at 50% RH of +-1% over 5 years.

All of these were well within the tolerances we needed.

It took over 7 months before the new sensors showed up... and when they
did show up, they were worse than the pre-re-engineered sensors.

When we went back to they for a fix.. we got told that there was likely
a problem in the re-engineered firmware... and they'd let us know...
Weeks went by and I could not even get a scheduled ship date.

As of this morning, I'm being told that the outside source for the firmware
is now offering the manufacturer a "non-commital" three weeks...

Frankly, I'm not holding my breath on when they will get it fixed.

It's really kind of sad. The problem looks to be as simple as a change in
the slope of the calibration curve, from testing these sensors in a
calibrated humidity chamber, that we have done.. but, apparently,
because the software was outsourced, it looks like Embeded Data Systems
hands' are tied.

This could be a really neat product. I wish Embedded Data Systems would
make a few changes.. 1) do power over ethernet.. doing so would permit
the HA7Net box to be at the end of the ethernet cable, with no need for
a wall wart and 2) would open-source the software so others could work
on the problems with it.. If so, I think it would go like gangbusters.

Look at the success Linksys has had with the WRT54 series of boxes, at least
in part driven by the demand for a platform on which to put open source
solutions, like Asterisk VOIP and OWFS!

I made one, half-hearted attempt to get OWFS running with the HA7NET and
tossed in the towel. I've moved to Dan Klein's thermd because it's easier
to maintain the config files.

I still think OWFS has a lot of uses.. so I keep watching the developemnts
here.. but I can't speak for the OWFS-HA7Net connection because I haven't
given it a "fair shot". I may take another look at it when I get some time.

IF you stay in the middle range of humidities, you would probably be happy
with the HA7Net... but if you need to go down into the lower range.. you
had better be prepared to wait, (and wait and wait and wait) for a solution
from Embeded.
