That's what I did on my meter, but:
* finding a phototransistor sensible to red light is not that easy (most 
are sensible to infrared)
* I added a red diode to report the blinks from the watched diode
* I didn't design the sensitivity circuit carefully, and finally had to 
cover the whole meter in a black box, because even with electric lights 
on, the ambient light level was so high that the red blink was not 
noticed (repeater diode always on)
