I use one on a turbine flow meter used on water and I also have it counting the revolutions of my electricity meter. Its great.

I used to use one for monitoring my water meters. Basically I had a Hall effect sensor that would trigger off the same magnet that drove the meter head, and the pulses would be accumulated by the 2423. It worked just fine. The only thing I noticed was that I had to be sure that it was powered before connecting it to the 1-wire bus, otherwise it would get into some strange lockup state. I never figured it out, but it was on UPSed power, so it didn't really matter. Unfortunately, the city replaced my meter about two years ago, and the new one has a much weaker magnet (not to mention a better security seal, so I can't get the head off to slip a sensor in between...)
