Donald, Most of these (TO-92 size) components fit within 1/4" copper tubing. With one end of the tubing capped, the tube may then be installed using compression fittings. My use for these has mostly been for measuring temperature in pressurized water lines, and tanks. Here are a few pictures (from an old water cooling project):
