Sounds like two problems. owfs/FUSE and the wiring.

You are right to test with owhttpd, since it has fewest failure modes. Hobby
Boards has wiring diagrams on their website. I'd follow them. The hubs do
need external power, and should show at least the 3 DS2409s.

As for the owfs/FUSE problem, if you start it with diagnostics (owfs
--foreground --error_level=9 -m /mountpoint -d /dev/ttyS0) you'll get some
information.
