Getting permission from Dallas sounds fine to me.  I have specific
permission for all code and data and background information currently used
in owfs and I wouldn't want to use any questionable techniques. At least in
the standard distribution.

Any contested or reverse-engineered components should be in a separate
version that is clearly labeled.

Besides, the people at Maxim have, in the past, been reasonably generous
with samples and advice and it would be discourteous to use their data
without permission.
