The most likely reason is because the crypto-stuff in there still stems from an era where the US had very strict exportrules regarding cryptography. Dallas, at the time, didn't want to take any chances with the US legal system and decided to comply with all regulations (even if they didn't strictly apply). As it is, the exportrestrictions from the US have long since been lifted, so the information is not subject to any legislatory limits anymore. I'd guess that noone at Maxim wants to invest the time and money to figure out if the procedure can be relaxed. >If it helps somehow, I can try to request the DS "officially" from Dallas >with the specific application I head for (secure door access control with >OSS software) and see what it takes to get it ? Well, I did, and the result is that after a week or so, you are asked to sign an NDA, which basically means that you can't disclose the information in the datasheets. OTOH, on the bright side, there is the "Public Domain 1-Wire Net Functions", version 3.10r2, released March 24th 2006 (most recently). The official license that comes along with those sources coming straight from Dallas/Maxim is that they grant anyone unlimited rights to reproduce, (re)publish and/or sell the sources. The rights have been granted over the period from 2000 to 2006 and cover all the sources in the package. In there, we find gems like: 31237 2006-06-05 17:37 sha18.c 29925 2006-06-05 17:37 sha33.c 41327 2006-03-30 19:12 shadbtvm.c 27107 2006-03-30 19:12 shadebit.c 22108 2006-03-30 19:12 shaib.c 13537 2006-03-30 19:12 shaib.h Which cover all the logic you need to implement useful functionality in owfs (for the DS1961S, DS1963S and DS2432). Bottom line: a. No, reproducing the information in the datasheets (still) is not allowed; so extending the manpages with that info is out of the question, unless you get explicit permission from Maxim. b. Using the information which is in the "Public Domain 1-Wire Net Functions" to implement any needed functionality *is* allowed. -- Stephen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lotusphere 2011 Register now for Lotusphere 2011 and learn how to connect the dots, take your collaborative environment to the next level, and enter the era of Social Business. http://p.sf.net/sfu/lotusphere-d2d _______________________________________________ Owfs-developers mailing list [email protected] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/owfs-developers
