It's been discussed on the list before (a couple of years ago?). It
got better, but is still there I think (I tried the latest version a
couple of months ago). It seems quite timing dependent and related to
frequent requests and big networks. I have a program using the C api
which creates a lot of traffic to owserver. My problem has been that
devices suddenly become unreadable and eventually owserver dies. I
have weather stations at three different location, and have had the
problem at all three locations. Eventually I've found a combination
of owserver version and network topology that is stable for each
location and managed.

You probably need quite a few devices to get the problem.
Unfortunately, my big 1-wire networks are all production systems, so I
haven't been able to spend much time to debug this.

Yes, wireless is great for isolating the effects of lightnings, but I
have a lot of custom sensors using 1-wire.

It's only three years ago another lightning fried my 1-wire network
and computers, so what I did after that was to add surge protection on
every wire leaving the house, and to run owserver on a device
connected to my network by wifi only.

Now I've a lot of broken surge protectors and a dead wifi box, but at
least some 1-wire devices survived (about 40 out of 60), my computers
are ok and the house didn't burn down.

Great! Another advantage of using multiple buses is that a short on
one bus then wont affect the others as it would using a hub.
