I agree that cost isn't the one reason to choose 1-wire, though I
should add that the snow depth sensor that I've built with 1-wire
stuff costs about $300 in parts and a couple of hours of work, while
commercial sensors easily cost $3000+.  Or that it's hard to beat the
cost of DS1820 at $1 each at eBay if you need dozens of thermometers.
Or that if something breaks, it's often simple to repair 1-wire stuff
with spare components, whereas a weather station bought at the
supermarket will have to be returned.

Still, I recommend people who wonder what equipment I use to go for a
"supermarket" version unless they're prepared to use the soldering
iron.

And I like owfs a lot, so even if I bought something completely
different, I'd still be inclined to make a 1-wire interface so I could
still use owfs...
