I am building a 26 foot wood power boat. The bilge below the cabin and afterdeck floor is 7 sealed water tight (hopefully) compartments. I plan no inspection ports but would like a way to detect moisture. If there were an appropriate sensor I could embed one in each compartment and occasionally hook up a Raspberry Pi and check for the presence of water. Cost is a consideration.
If you want to check for water leaks embedding some electrodes would be a good idea. However normal copper wires would corrode over time. I've read that electrodes from stainless steel or graphite ones are used in the industry. For a DIY project the cheapest way would be to use brushes from a electric motor(i.e. vacum cleaner or a driller ). They come cheap as spare parts and you can solder then to w normal copper wire because there are leads attached to the block of graphite.
Then if your compartment is folded the resistance measured between the leads would be low.
