I use Mail Enable on 2008 where I used the POP3 Service on 2003, Mail Enable 
standard edition is free and does everything plus more than the 2003 POP3 
service.  
You can find it at www.mailenable.com, plus it is a Melbourne company.  

The Readify guys used to run oztfs etc on mailenable and I heard from one of 
the administrators that it is terrible/unreliable (and why they had problems 
with list availability).  

  
Maybe test it under load first and see how it runs.
