That is a great summary. Clearly, the trick is to be the boss of the permanent body shop.
In Brisbane there is currently very few new contracts, and a relatively strong permanent market. The advantage of being a government contractor is that you don't get stuck in one dysfunctional government department, you get to move around many of them. The disadvantage is that you miss out on the most fun work. Employers doa lot of permanent not invest in contractors so you don't get paid training and you don't get to work on serious research since there is no value in building deep skills in a contractor who will only be around for a few months. Of course, there is not much (any?) interesting work going on in the government anyway. I like to build products for small businesses and startups. It's risky, I don't always get paid, working conditions are often appalling, but the work is fun.
