Final post on this: it seems on starting VS again, now all works as expected: invoking the Fusion Log Viewer tool from the VS2010 Tools menu first prompts for password, then it appears in the required state.

Now I do (eventually) see it is running with elevated permissions. But something very odd happens first: VS pops up a dialogue to connect to Team Foundation Server (I have never used this on this machine/install), after the expected UAC dialogue. I left it unanswered; then, another UAC dialogue led to the fusion log viewer, on which I could change Settings. Closing that TFS dialogue, quitting VS2010, I got an error message from the compatibility assistant. A little more trial & error is required - so far, this has confused me when I was expecting a time + convenience tweak would be a 5 minute effort. _____ Ian Thomas Victoria Park, Western Australia _____ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ian Thomas Sent: Saturday, December 17, 2011 2:32 PM To: 'ozDotNet' Subject: RE: VS configuration - external tools Bill, David Yes, I want to run it from within VS. I haven't been able to construct parameters* (within the External Tools dialogue) to suit Runas, and a suitably-constructed shortcut isn't allowed from within that tool. Just using the path to FUSLOGVW.exe doesn't allow it to be elevated. *(parameters seem not applicable to what I want, anyway) _____ Ian Thomas Victoria Park, Western Australia _____ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of David Kean Sent: Saturday, December 17, 2011 2:01 PM To: ozDotNet Subject: RE: VS configuration - external tools I'm, guessing Ian wants this so that he can launch it from VS. I haven't tried this, but right-click on the exe, click Properties, choose Compatibility and then check Run as Admin. I'm guessing this should work. But changing the Settings in this requires that it is run as Administrator. I can't see how that can be done in the External Tools of Visual Studio. Also, this 'wizard' in VS will not accept a shortcut (which could be flagged to run as Admin). Any suggestions? ________________________________ Ian Thomas Victoria Park, Western Australia
