It is just another interconnect standard. Looks very close to HDMI but with
three square corners and one bevelled one as opposed to two square corners
and two bevelled ones. There is a display port socket on the bottom of your
U2711 if you look.

If you already have the dual-link DVI cables in and working - there is no
benefit for you unless you want to use the audio ports on the monitor
(which can be a pain in the proverbial to get going depending on what your
GPU drivers decide to do re presenting it to Windows).
