Personally, I wouldn't bother. Most are charlatans. There are no magic tricks that and SEO company will give you and it comes down to some basic things.
1) Make sure your web site is crawler friendly. 2) Make sure you have lots of good content and are continually updating and adding to it 3) Promote your site so other people start coming to it and linking to it. How you promote depends on the industry. 4) Wait. That's it. There are also tools like Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools which will help you measure where your visitors are coming from and what they are looking for, so install them and play around.
