Yep.  Windows 8 is certainly not perfect.

I added a desktop shortcut to C:\Users\<user name>\Recent to deal with losing 
“Recent Documents”, and pinned it to the start menu so it becomes a tile on the 
start screen as well.  Probably gives you more ‘recents’ than you want though.

I still don’t understand why Sleep/Restart/Shutdown is on the Charms menu, but 
I have to go to the Start screen to logoff/lock.  Having all of those in the 
one place before made sense.

And losing “Recent Documents” is a PITA

I remember MS getting grief in the trade press many years ago for having 
options to Restart/Shutdown Windows on the Start button menu – “Stop by 
clicking Start – really?”  And I find a lot of the discussions today re the 
missing Start button and the Modern UI in Windows 8 reminiscent of the furore 
the introduction of the Ribbon bar in Office caused.  We seem to have moved on 
from there, and I suspect we will move on from here as well.
