Dear Di - one of the old fashioned birth stools is probably the best type to
use. The seat is wider than ther newer types, being more comfortable for the
mother. I have always found it better to use them backwards with the mother
leaning forward onto the bed, as the mother-to-be tends to find this
position the most comfortable and the perineum tends not to become
oedematous. We have been using a birth stool since we opened our unit and
have not had any greater degrees of perineal injury or greater than usual
blood loss (an argument given to me by other institutions who resist the use
of birthing stools). They are wonderful for tired legs and when mums have
been on their knees for ages, or to bring down a little head which has been
tucked up inside. We have a lovely old stool and wouldn't part with it! Hope
this helps - Lynne Staff
