Thankyou to all for your replies. I'm getting some fantastic information
and support. For those who were interested, the community I work for has
about 500 people. English is a second (or even third!) language. Women
from this and other communities travel to the nearest town - 1000 km! - to
'sit down' and wait for the birth. A very disruptive time for the family,
lonely for her, and of course she agrees to a 'social' induction.......
The midwives out here want to offer alternatives, but we are yet to
discover what they are. The young women have never known anything else, so
it's a bit hard for them to say what they want. The older women birthed in
the bush, so they know what they want for the young women!
My idea was to present the young women with successful models of care from
elsewhere, as well as what the older women are recommending, so they could
think about alternatives that they would be happy with.
This will be a long process, but a worthwhile one.
