Title: Re: turning a breech
Hi!  We have a client who is due in 5 weeks and her babe is presenting as footling breech.  The hospital is talking ceasarean if it doesn't turn.  I know there are exercises and other natural things that she can try - does anyone have some really effective methods to remedy this situation??

Hi Karen,

Just some thoughts... How about using sound, or light, to encourage the baby to
turn. The mother plays the music, or places the light/torch (in a darkened
room) on her belly next to the baby's head, then slowly (very, very slowly)
moves it downwards towards where she wants her baby's head to be - in the
perfect head-down position for birth. It may spike the baby's interest, and
the baby may follow it's curiosity downwards... It has supposedly worked,
and is worth a try.

I've heard breech babies being described, in a spiritual way, as occurring
because the mother wants to hold her baby close to her heart, and the mother
must release her baby to allow him/her to turn ready for birth - she may be
exerting a strong love/fear that holds her baby in this position. We know so
little of this aspect of birthing, don't we?

I have heard that babies have turned from breech to normal position during
labour, so I guess it's never really too late, if we are prepared to wait.
Some women have used kinesiology and acupuncture successfully.

Women can also lie in a 'comfortable' position that tilts their pelvis a bit
higher than their head - with a pillow below their bottom while they watch telly
- to try to encourage your baby to move. But only if they feel reasonably
comfortable, and don't feel faint (as major blood vessels could get pressure
placed on them in this position). If the baby does move, then they should go
for a walk to help him/her stay in their new position.

Also, on the Ozmidwifery List they passed on this information:

Can anyone give me information on the Webster Breech Technique?

Here is the information from Anne Frye's Holistic Midwifery.

Larry Webster’s Chiropractic Technique for Turning Breech Babies:

Step one: Place the woman in a prone position. Flex each leg toward her
buttocks; find the side of most resistance. Adjust sacrum (P-A on that side,
contact point sacral notch below P.S.I.S., use light thrust due to softened
ligaments of mother.) There are two possible occurrences after adjustment:
The most resistant leg releases to equal the least resistant leg (80%).
The least resistant leg comes back to equal the most resistant (20%).

You are looking for an equalization of resistance on flexion of legs on the
buttocks. This equalization should take place before going on to step two.
If the woman is evaluated on her side, the lower leg will automatically be 1
inch more resistant; allow for this in your evaluation.

Step two: Place woman in a supine position. On the side opposite of sacral
adjustment, draw a line 45’ lateral and inferior from the umbilicus; draw
another line from the ASIS inferior and medial 45’. Where they bisect hold
an I-S contact with your thumb (3 to 6 oz. of pressure). Rotate thumb from
bisect point 15’ in either direction until muscle bundle is felt. Hold thumb
contact for 60 to 90 seconds. You will feel the muscle drop away from your
pressure. Stop at this point. Do not adjust another segment that day.

Adjust every 2 to 3 days for 2 weeks; the baby should turn. If during the
second or third visit there is equal resistance on both buttocks, do not
adjust. On alternate days you can adjust elsewhere along the spine.

Good luck! Babies can even turn in labour. My one little tiny bit of advice
would be to try ECV with an experienced professional, if the other
techniques don't encourage your baby to budge. And if planning a caesarean,
then how about booking it for your due date, rather than 2 weeks before, or
maybe even waiting until you go into labour? Just some thoughts. Take care,
and don't forget to let me know how everything turns out.
