Megan,
That is so fantastic. I have been currently doing my own search for health
insurance which covers private midwifes and supports homebirths.
The only one so far I have found that definitely provides for midwifes is
Australian United. They cover private midwifes under their comprehensive
hospital insurance. Below is their little blurb:
Australian Unity pays up to $620, made up of $400 for your own
midwife's attendance at the delivery in hospital, $30 for pre-natal
and $40 for post-natal visits. The midwife must be in private practice and
recognised by
Australian Unity. Additional benefits are also available for
attendance by a midwife at home births.
To actually utilise this you need to have some fairly detailed discussion
with them and there appears to be some limitations but I think it is pretty
good overall.
I have been told that NRMA also covers midwifes but am having a lot of
difficulty actually finding someone in the organisation that will confirm
this and tell me what package/hospital cover it comes under.
I will have to explore the Army Insurance. My husband is in the Army but for
some reason I have even thought about their health insurance policies.
Thanks for the advice.
Sally

Subject: midwifery rebate
I am pleased to announce that our Health Insurance, Army Health Benefits,
paid up on the costs of our birth at home supported by a Midwife in private
practice, her insurance status not questioned (of course there isn't any).
We are not in the Defence, they opened the cover up to Telstra employees,
possibly others I am unaware of. To top it off , they will not be increasing
their membership fees. Thumbs up to them.
Perhaps we could collect a list of Insurance companies that are happy to
continue to pay rebates on midwifery, with or without PII.
