I would be horrified if a Midwife approached me in a hospital while I slept and took my child off me.

While I do believe that parent's should be able to do what they like, my understanding was that any concern on the part of staff in maternity units to co-sleeping was not any risk of SIDS, but mainly that hospital beds are usually very tiny, and a fear that baby (or mother) may either roll/ get pushed off or get squashed against the side rails.  Now this is taken from the perspective of UK NHS beds :-)

Again in the UK - some maternity units have 3-sided cots which attach or lie against the bed with the open side against the mother's bed - so that mum and baby are effectively lying side-by-side.  They are quite expensive so not always available for every bed, and were often given to mums who had had a section, as it was easier for mums to get baby in and out and feed etc.
