I'm a about 172cm tall and wear size eight clothes (size 6 before kids!), genetically
just don't have much fat. When I was pregnant with my first child the midwives told me
that my baby was going to be an average size (around 8lb) and they were very shocked
when I managed to push out my 10lb 1oz (4570gm) girl. My first memories after she was
born was the midwife saying "Oh, she's SO big!" My third was also a 10lb 2oz (4600gm)
baby and after both of them people 'assumed' I'd had a c-section because I was and
still am so skinny. It always used to annoy me that people would just assume this. I
now think that you can't tell by just looking at someone if they are able to birth a
'large' baby. I remember growing up and hearing adults say "She's got good birthing
hips!" Ugh!

I just find it disheartening to hear someone say that they were glad that they had a
c-section because their baby was 'large'. I mean fair enough if it was 12lb or
something (although I have heard that's possible!)

Anyway, I'm not yet a midwife and there's probably more to it than this like for
instance cephalopelvic disproportion. Actually I have a question. If a woman has an
android pelvis is this the same thing as having CPD? I have read that depending on the
severity of the shape of the pelvis you can still give birth vaginally. So what
happens to those women who have a slightly android pelvis and are given this new drug
to open the cervix quicker, wouldn't the baby not have had enough time to become
moulded to fit through? Thus ending in even more c-sections? and not to mention stress
on baby and mother?

Big baby would, in my books, be over 4000. A lot does depend on the size of the mother.  Why the caesar? Hopefully not for 'big baby'

Subject: [ozmidwifery] big baby fear?

Hi all,
I'm concerned that saying to a mother that their having a "nice big baby" can be a bit terrifying as my niece just told me that she was so glad she had a caesarean because he was such a big baby. He was actually only... weight 2980, length 49.5cm head circumference 35.5cm. I asked her why she thought this was big as its her second child and second ceasar. Her reply was that all through her pregnancy she was told that he was a big baby, even a very big baby! maybe it was because my niece is very overweight that this was said, I don't know? I'm sure the Midwives meant that he was a healthy baby not to huge to be birthed. What is a big baby anyway?
