Oh additionally I would like to clarify my thoughts/words about midwifery guidelines vs obstetric guidelines.
My main thoughts are that for midwifery led services we need midwifery guidelines. Safe, responsible guidelines. Midwifery as a profession needs to be able to dispel the myth that midwifery guidelines are not as safe as obstetric guidelines. We need to be able to regulate our own profession. The usefulness of this discussion could be as simple as ensuring that midwives ensure that guidelines for their practice are midwifery guidelines. Just as a physiotherapist is not regulated by the doctor who he/she refer clients to, midwives should not be regulated by the medicos but work together whenever it is needed.
