Hi I thought I would add my two bobs worth to the discussion on Anti D.  I find QML pretty good.  I have gone into the Lab’s and asked for the vial’s which they give me.  I have been asked for my registration details just once. I rang the local hospital and spoke to the pathology department and informed them of what I needed.  They told me if my client came in with the Pathology requests, and a copy of her blood’s they would freely give the anti D.  I tried this with my last client and she obtained the Anti D without too much trouble. She was able to keep it at hand for the birth.  I then rang QML laboratories in the early hours of the morning which I have done on other occasions and told them I had blood for them to collect from a homebirth.  They came to the home without too much trouble and collected blood from the mother to boot!!!!!!!!!

I have not found this to be a problem and neither should it be.  I’m sorry to hear you had so much problems Sue.  I once worked as a traditional midwife before I went back and got my registration and I was able to just drop the vials at QML or Sullivan and Nicolades with the path request, fortunately I never had a problem.

We would also be seen as and diciplined for being negligent..but it doesn't change the fact that we have no authority to give drugs, order simple blood work, Ultrasound, CTG etc. without the doctors written order.  The Pilot of  "The expanded role of the midwife" is currently being tried in 3 hospital sites in W.A.  The homebirth midwives on the Govt funded program and those in private practice, never got a look in.  We are really the ones who get desperate for ways of supplying what we are expected to provide.  Most G.P's & hospital clinics refuse to give women prescriptions for their back-up drugs (Synto etc)because "they won't be present when it is being administered." It is certainly still a battle.

Is there any university here that offers a Pharmaceutical Course and Legal issues for independant midwives?Just doing a course won't make it legalThere is a course that goes along with the expanded role of the midwife program, but as I said, we are not included. MM
