Some pages have delegate controls available. Open the page and look for a 'delegate' control, if it has one, you can inject your own override. For example userdisp.aspx has one that allows you to redirect/replace the default behaviour when a user clicks a person's name or chooses 'my settings'.

If there is a way to programatically change defaults for system pages without modifying them directly, or providing an alternative, I would love to know about it too. Is there an easy way to change the default so that it's NOT ticked? If so, does anyone have an example?
