Thanks Paul. Yes, it is a publishing pages library.
Just tried it and I was able to modify the page successfully as you suggested below. Problem is (and given your email you'll probably sympathise) the person editing the page is a student at a school so I was hoping they could get to edit mode via the Edit Page method as it's simpler (particularly when it comes to editing web parts on the page). Got any other suggestions?
