I've had this problem before with one of my clients, too. I think the photos in search results may also be dependent to the photos uploaded to AD profile.
I've tried to re-run the people search before and still not working until I uploaded photos through AD profile. I'm still not sure whether this is the solution or not. If you don't mind, can you please try both and let us know, please?
