I have also had this issue with a couple of clients. It seems SharePoint does some funny things when it resizes the profile pictures.
I found one of the solutions was (after everyone had uploaded their photo) to run this PowerShell script on the server. Update-SPProfilePhotoStore -MySiteHostLocation "http://MySiteHostLocationURL/ETC"; Put your My Site host location within the (") at the end. This apparently updated all the images to the correct format/size etc for them to be displayed in search results and profiles. Hope it helps.
