When I first started working with TFS2008 I accidently created a build
type in Visual Studio 2005. The C# application I Built with that
definition got an error that only applies to C++( if I recall
correctly). I know that this is specifically not supported by Microsoft
if you look up the "compatibility matrix" for VS2005 and VS2008. (I'm
too lazy to look u the link for it!)

Note to make clear most of the builds work fine - only SOME of the
builds get this problem.

Hi,

What happens if you use Team Explorer 2005 to create the Build Type?

By default, the TFS2008 Wizard is putting
"<DropLocation>\\UNKNOWN\drops</DropLocation
<file:///\\UNKNOWN\drops%3c\DropLocation> >" into the build types. I've
now tried both setting it to it's valid value - and deleting it - but
not difference - I still get the error...

Did you remove the DropLocation property from your build file? This is
needed for backwards compat with 2005 clients (even though the server
value takes precedence)

Interesting the only time I have seen that in the 2008 UI with a 2005
build script was when I added an extra property group at the top of the
proj file, but you get the error every time you build, not
sporadically.

My client is using TFS 2008 SP1 but most applications are still
using VS2005. I have a number of build types that until recently have
built without any issue using the VS2005 GUI. Recently SOME of the
build types have been getting the error (as a message box) from the
VS2005 GUI "Drop location is not defined in the Build Type <Build Type
Name"

Another symptom I've noticed, if you right click on the "Team
Builds" node on the VS2005 Team Explorer and click "Build Team Project
Applications..." in the dropdown for "Build Type", the build types
appear to be in a "Random" order - and don't include the projects I'm
having the issue with. Note that even after adding the Property of
"DropLocation" to the "TFSBuild.proj" for the build type - the problem
continues.

As a "Work Around" I'm having the developers build from VS2008
or Web Access - but it would be preferred to be able to build from the
IDE they are developing in.

Also - is there a way to control in the VS2005 IDE what "Build
Machines" show in the dropdown? We have a "Dev" TFS environment with a
"DEV" TFS2008SP1 Build Agent - that I would like to NOT be able to be
requested from "Production TFS"

The problem seemed to start happening after I restored the
Production TFS backup to the Dev Server (not sure if that's conincdence)

        Thanks!
