, but we're in danger of standardizing on a poorly designed architecture in
all adopting BitTorrent.

By the way, are there any similar protocols (in terms of instant
single-file-downloading features) possibly in the research area, which may
come in competition with BitTorrent in a near future ?

I'm sure you realize there are many, many P2P protocols out there in
competition with BitTorrent right now, so we needn't wait for the near
future. I assume you're ignoring Gnutella, FastTrack (Kazaa), and OverNet
(eDonkey) because they integrate searching and downloading, but other
"instant single-file-downloading" networks include Red Swoosh, Dijjer,
Kontiki, possibly Xunlei, and many more.

So there's plenty of competition with BT right now, and it's not at all
certain that BT will come out on top.
