Editing the configfile itself should be fine.
You may have accidentally entered a special character in the file or changed
the permissions.
Ideally you should change the violations through the GUI (Configuration >
Violations at the bottom left).
That prevents you from messing up the file and means you don’t have to reload
the config.
If the file is readable (and parseable) a configreload hard should do the trick
in PF 5.
