Hi everyone,

today, a user complained about the poor state of the "Directory Tree"
tab in Padre.
A look to the bug tracking system confirmed what he/she said: There
are plenty of issues with this feature.
I marked all bugs that I saw with "directory tree", so that one can
find me easily:

http://padre.perlide.org/trac/search?q=%22directory+tab%22&noquickjump=1&ticket=on

I think we should improve that part of Padre a bit more, because in
the current form it may
actually drive away people from Padre - imagine how much you would
trust a tool that does not
even let you open a file when you double click on it (issue #982) ...

So I urge everyone who has some time available to focus on this aspect
of Padre and maybe fix a bug or two!

As a start, I took care of one of the issues the user complained
about: http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/982

Here are some things that you can do to improve the state of the
"Directory Tree" tab in Padre:
 - start using it in your daily activities, and report unknown issues
(I am sure there are still some)
   that annoy you
 - roll up your sleeves and fix one of the defects listed here:

http://padre.perlide.org/trac/search?q=%22directory+tab%22&noquickjump=1&ticket=on
 - help others to fix bugs by trying to reproduce the reports and
finding out more details
 - help others to fix bugs by testing their solutions once they are
commited to trunk.

As some kind of "bounty", I promise to invite the most active
contributor (within the next month) to those issues
for a beer (or wine, tea, lemonade, whatever you drink) at the next
community event where we both
attend. I plan to attend FOSDem and CeBit next year, so there should
be some opportunities to meet up ;-).

Best regards,
  Zeno
