Do it yourselfers can accomplish this for perhaps $200.

Filing also requires that you submit all source code, although you can black
out areas you deem trade secrets.

But I agree with you Alan, in general, it's just not worth pursuing the
infringer.  Unfortunately, the thieves know this too.  The only options
available to small developers is to continue to innovate, develop a loyal
following for your product, and choose battles you can win.
