Term of a patent is now 20 years from the filing date (used to be 17 years
from the date of issue).  Depending on the technology and other factors,
the time from filing to issue date can be anywhere from 9 months to 3 to
5 years.  About 18 to 24 months is typical, but certain areas are much
longer because of the large number of applications being filed in that
technology.
