I see ... so what is an application meant to do if it receives data from

exchange manager while it's database is already open? Throw it away? Stick
it in a temp. database?

If you're doing Object Exchange developement, you really want to read
through the source code for the Address Book or the Memo Pad. They show
everything for a working implementation. The answers you're looking for
are there.
For instance, you'll see that the apps do check if their globals exist and
then they just their existing DmOpenDBRef. They avoid trying to open the
database again.
