Thank you to everyone who replied to this. I hadn't RTFM closely enough and
was coding under the assumption that a subcall could _not_ reference
globals, instead of the other way round. Don't ask me why, it made sense at
the time. Kind of.
All is fun and happiness now, until I hit my next problem. But let's not
worry about that yet :)
