Why not was meant to imply why could you not update portions of the ROM with
a RAM patch. Its possible not all features could be updated, but it could
be better than nothing.
(yes I under stand the IIIe doesn't use FLASH and you can't update its ROM)

Not true... a hammer will reprogram you IIIe so it functions flawlessly as a
paper-weight.
