The sound pickers in the system Prefs form simply modify the 
appropriate variables in the system prefs. There's a section in the 
Palm OS Companion document that enumerates the ways to interpret volume 
preferences in the various OS versions.

Keep in mind that the recommended way for apps to use the sound level 
settings is to read them once at startup. Any apps that are actually 
written that way will not respond to changes you make via a hack while 
they are running.
