I'm afraid I found the Glenn Bachmann book to be a complete turkey, especially if you don't have Metroworks. To give you an idea of what it's like, the examples in the book didn't even work with the demo version of Metroworks that came with it. I found almost all the examples had some flaw or another, making it clear that they hadn't been properly tested. I found the best thing to start with is the tutorial that comes with GUCCI. I've also heard quite good things about the Dummies book, although I haven't tried it myself.
