Well, we did do some of that.

Choosing the 'right' feature set, bug fixes, etc. for a release is not
exactly easy.  It's even harder because everyone whines about
compatibility... so somehow we have to keep out-innovating the competetion
while making sure that apps written to the old APIs still work.  That's not
very easy.

In this case, it was easy to add this feature, it didn't cause any
compatibility problems, and for a certain class of developer it will be
very useful.  So, it got it.

Anyway, I know that doesn't answer all your questions, sorry.  But then, I
don't think good answers to all your questions actually exist!
