The Palm III was the first device that handled 2-bpp drawing. But, not
officially. You actually had to hack things a little bit to make it work.
The (unofficial) gray support got a little bit better with each subsequent
OS release. e.g. 4-bpp support was added in PalmOS 3.3.
To learn more about this, look at the Knowledge Base article called "Seeing
Gray" (when the Knowledge Base is back up.)
With PalmOS 3.5 (not released yet), you get official support for 1, 2, 4,
and 8-bpp in both grayscale and color.
