Handling elapsed time during sleep mode is a separate topic. As far 
as your question re more accurate timers using CPU counters, I wrote 
an article a while ago for Handheld Systems Journal re microsecond 
elapsed time on the Palm. The code is at 
<ftp://ftp.transpac.com/timer/>. The article was in Issue 6.6, 
Nov/Dec 1998. There's some info still at 
<http://www.cdpubs.com/hhsys/>, but the magazine is no longer 
published.
