Well, the waveforms generated are close approximations, not accurate reproductions, so
the article is both technically and factually correct. We can't predict every possible
hack and application of our devices! I'd say you're reading too much into the
"absoluteness" of the article from a purely engineering perspective rather than taking
the larger picture into consideration. The double-sided argument of telling people
what can or cannot be done always applies within a particular context -- that of the
functionality supported by the operating system on a particular device.
If we said yes, it is possible to use a Palm device as an IR remote control, we'd have
to add a disclaimer like "Doing so would require bypassing the operating system and
speaking directly with the hardware, which would allow your software to perform
absolutely anything we haven't thought of or choose not to support with some level of
precision that may or may not be sufficient to achieve the results your seeking
therefore Palm Computing cannot guarantee the reliability or appropriateness of the
application or its effect on the target hardware or on any other device affected by
its application or..." (blah blah blah)
