Kernighan & Richie's "The C Programming Language" has already been
recommended, with good reason. However, another book I'd recommend
from my student days (I had to teach myself C in a few days for a course)
was the Wrox Press "Instant C" book - very easy to read, covers ANSI C,
and assumes no particular compiler or OS (always a boon for a non-Windows
person such as myself).
