Actually, some of the best beginner's descriptions of C programming were
written by W. Richard Stevens in his book "Unix Network Programming" - I
believe he broke out the C programming section as a separate book (forget
the title).
I've also found the book "Absolute Beginner's Guide to C" is pretty good, too.
And, yes, K&R should be on your bookshelf
(BTW, for those with the first edition, look up "squirrel" in the index and
find the reference - the book's got an Easter Egg!)
